A Federal TIN must be furnished on statements, returns, and other tax related records. For example:

  • When filing your tax returns.
  • When claiming treaty benefits.

A Federal TIN must be on a withholding certificate if the beneficial owner is claiming the following:

  • Exemption for income that is effectively connected
  • Exemption for certain annuities

When Claiming Exemptions for Spouse or Dependent:

You usually must record in your individual income tax return the social security number (SSN) of any man for whom you claim an exemption. If spouse or your dependent doesn’t have and isn’t permitted get an SSN, you must record the ITIN rather than an SSN. You don’t want an SSN or ITIN for a kid who died and was born in exactly the same tax year.

Instead of an SSN or ITIN, attach a copy of the kid’s birth certificate and write Expired on the proper exemption line of your tax return.

EIN
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also called a national tax identification number, and is used to identify a business thing. Refer to Company ID Numbers to find out more.

ITIN
It’s a 9-digit number, starting with the number “9”, formatted like an SSN (NNN-NN-NNNN).
The Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and identity that is true for each person. You may send the instruction manual, together with the Form W-7, to the address shown in the Form W-7 Directions, present it at IRS walk in offices, or process your application through an Approval Agent authorized by the IRS.
